"All
men are members of the same body,
Created from one essence.
If fate brings suffering to one member,
The others cannot stay at rest.
You who remain indifferent
To the burden of pain of others,
Do not deserve to be called human."

1. We form a NDYS team in our school
2. We do "the NDYS Ambassador Exchange" with Japan, Iran and
Russia.
Our students keep a diary for NDYS Ambassadors and escort them to visit
principals in school and students to convey the NDYS messages to them.
|
 |
3. We join the video conferences with Japan.
4. Students did the data collection on Sep. 21 Earthquake of Taiwan in
1999, including watching the documentary film of Sep.21 Earthquake called
"Life", writing reflection on it, and a field trip to the affected area in
Nantou, the central part of Taiwan, in February.
5. We will cooperate with National Science and Technology Museum (http://www.nstm.gov.tw/) and help to launch the opening ceremony of the
first "Earthquake experience room" in the museum on Feb 16.
6. We create a website for our NDYS
project.(http://shs.fcsh.khc.edu.tw/fcsh202/contact5.html)
7. We contact more schools to get involved in this project. We hope to arouse more awareness of natural disaster prevention.

Iran Tehran Farzanegan
high school 2005/1/5
I'm too.I'm Neda Rahimian from Farzanegan school of Iran and a student
of Ms. Behnoodi.Lately, I have studied a lot about earthquake waves
and got new things. First kind of earthquake waves(p) cross solids,
liquids and gases but second one just cross solids. So when an area
stones expands , small breaks are created on them and liquids flow in
them then speed of waves changes and Vp/Vs decreases.
Before earthquake this events happen; so we can predict
earthquake by liquid speed alternatives.
|
 |
This method was discovered in United Soviets for
first time. They measured Vp/Vs each they and make a figure like in
front for them.
In 2 years that they measured Vp/Vs it was fixed but before earthquake
decreased and before it return to normal number, earthquake happened.
In front figure first you can see a char related to Adirondack (New
York) earthquake, second one is related to United Soviets earthquake
and the
last one is r! elated to SanFransisco (California) earthquake.
Horizontal axis is for time and vertical axis is Vp/Vs. I and 2
of my friends are researching to make amachine for predicting
earthquake. with regards &respect.

Activities which we are doing are directed to nature disasters. In our
country we have not earthquakes, only some small waves which are as a
consequence of earthquake in another country near us. We have had very
strong wind - hurricane sometimes or flood in many places in our small
country.
At the present time we have prepared some help for parents in the
country with frequently disasters and for young children about 4 - 7
years old, who are very confused of this situation if is nature
disaster, for better understanding. It will be some pictures booklet,
where will be introduced, why it is happened and how to prevent of
it.
|

|
My students try to understand, how people can feel during this disaster,
but it is very hard to take the same feeling, isn't it?
My students are studying at technical secondary -high school - they
are directed for electrotechnic and they try to prepare some sound
connection between parents and children which will be helped mothers and
fathers for their children.
Let me introduce this situation.
In many countries small children are playing around the house or a flat
and their mothers and fathers do not know in each time where are they.
Sometimes information about nature disaster will come very late and
maybe only a few minutes family has for reaction. This
"sensor" will have a mother/father and the same will have a
child and only a few minutes will be for calling a child home. Can you
understand? It is not ready, because we need to do test if is possible
to connect people by noice or light for 50 or 60m. The next test
will be medical if is possible to use for body.
That is all what we have prepared for March meeting and we would like to
present it.

Subject : Why
Earthquake ?
Our group in Senegal is divided in
three groups working on a topic each one .The whole groups are working
on the causes of Earthquake :
-
Natural causes
-
Historical causes
-
Religious causes
|

|
Three meetings are fixed with
specialist on the topics and all students will attend to the meetings
but the responsable of the group will write a report that will be posted
on our web site .
The best part of the project will be
the questions , suggestions and propositions that will be made by the
students and the report .
Students will discuss about the
possibility to help those affected by the desaster and what can be done
to stope or maybe to reduce the danger for all population and
particularly for youth .

| The project in our school is being carried out as a
collaborative work between the geography teacher, Miriam Borgognoni, and myself. I teach
students English as a foreign language. Students were divided into
groups and they had to choose one of the topics on the list proposed.herefore, we dealt with most headings. However, we did not work on earthquakes only
but on natural disasters in general since our country is most commonly
affected by disasters such as floods and droughts.
|
 |
|
They did the research and made
mindmaps with the inormation collected..Then they translated that information into English and each group prepared a Power Point
presentation.
We also created an e-group to share all the work done so far. We also
got involved in sending messages of support to the forum for those who
suffered earthquakes lately.
My students also decided to put into practice the idea of planting a
tree as a symbol of environment protection proposed by Doris Wu and we did so
planting a tree in our school yard.
We are really enjoying the project.

Greetings to you and a happy and healthy 2005!
How exciting that you have snow. The children and adults (skiers) here in Seattle have been eager
for snow in the mountains. I have talked with our fourth grade teacher and the seventh grade science
teacher so hopefully those students can add their voices to the forum also?
|
Also, I received a beautiful collection of Christmas messages from a school in Nagoya. I recall Masahiro
saying that an elementary school from Kobe would be in relationship with St. Joseph's. Either way I am
delighted but I would like my sixth grade students to respond soon to the Nagoya children by creating
personal introductions and cards. Please let me know how to proceed.

.
As a part of our great project we have sent our symbol owl Glasha
to
Taiwan
with our letters
and we hope that they will get it before the New Year.
Thanks to Yanagi elementary school we have received the bear
"Doctor" and letters from students and a lot of
questions we will answer soon. Our students painted pictures with
Natural disasters as volcanoes, tsunami,
earthquakes and tornadoes. We used them in our presentations and
website |

|
We have
learned physical nature of disasters, and what causes the
disasters and their mechanism. We gathered material about each theme. We
learned the geography of catastrophes in
Russia
, and made a map, and used
it in the presentation. We are gathering all the publications from
newspapers and magazines about nowadays disasters. We have
founded in Internet animation film about endogens process and used it in
our presentation and discussed it with our students. We are happy to
participate in such interesting and important project.
